Brogan the Grey
hopeandlovethanwecouldhave
imagined.
This little child so small and sweet
Gives Mom and Dad both joy complete.
When he tears around the house
He's not as quiet as a mouse,
His smile can light up any room
No time for tears or doom and gloom.
His sensitivity amazes
With long-lashed eyes he slyly gazes
And hugs you 'til you gasp for air
When he tears around the house
He's not as quiet as a mouse,
His smile can light up any room
No time for tears or doom and gloom.
His sensitivity amazes
With long-lashed eyes he slyly gazes
And hugs you 'til you gasp for air
This cuddly little Brogan Bear.

Surreal Motherhood
Today I brought the Brogster to storytime at the library.
It's been over a year since we last went. For some reason Brogan feels called upon to perform (can you say "quack"). He acts shy in this setting. Before leaving home, Brogan was asked if he wanted to go to storytime at the library today. He said he did. He looked puzzled and told me, "Mommy, there's no bed there."
He has strong associations, this guy. Stories=bedtime. Zoo=animals. Swimming=swim vest. Uncle Aaron=BYU. I said, no, there's no bed but stories can be for playtime.
Having just left a gathering of Brogan's "peers," that is, preschoolers, and sat through a duck-themed event, we walked out to the parking lot and Brogan pointed to a white car.
"That's like our car, Mom." (Ours is gold).
I see the Toyota hood emblem. And he's right.
"Yes, that is a Camry like ours."
We get to our car. I reach for the keys to unlock the door.
"That's a zoo car, Mom."
Distractedly, I open the door and reach for his seat belt. I turn to the car next to us. Maybe I thought I was going to see a safari jeep or a tiger-striped vehicle.
I saw a bumper sticker saying simply "RENEW THE ZOO."
You see, Brogan can read. He's 3.
Two nights ago, I read him a Dr. Suess book. I Can Read With My Eyes Shut. A funny little book with rhymes, which Brogan revels in. I did not delve into every detail on every page. It was time for bed. Good night, little Brogan.
As usually happens, the potty called and parents were summoned back to help dispose of the contents.
While waiting, Brogan picked up the Suess book and when I walked in he pointed to a particular page, an illustration of a contraption.
Brogan pointed and said "That says ON and that says OFF, Mom."
It did say those words.. I hadn't read this part of the page and since Brogan has well over 150 books at last count, I hadn't even read this book to him since the day I bought it.
"Wow, great job, you are reading."
"The N has an O and the F's have an O."
"Yes."
How does one put into words this feeling. Should this be happening? Aren't you three kiddo? Have you skipped a grade?
Last night.
Daddy and Brogan walk back from his room carrying a book. Daddy says, "Show Mommy."
Brogan says, "Look, Mom." Opening the book, he points to the sign above the door of a big brick building. "S-C-H-O-O-L school." (This is how he spells every word. Points to each letter and says each one and then says the whole word. Like a spelling bee).
Z-O-O zoo. B-R-O-G-A-N Brogan. Ad nauseum. But not really. I am almost in a state of shock. Each remarkable event is small. But the dawning of understanding is huge.
My "toddler." My preschooler. My child born to me just three years ago. I look at him and love every moment.
M-O-M-M-Y-H-O-O-D Mommyhood.
I feel like the luckiest person in the world.
